Rajendra Prasad, born on December 3, 1884, in Ziradei, Bihar, was a prominent Indian politician, lawyer, and journalist. He was the youngest child in his family. His father, Mahadev Sahai, was a scholar of Sanskrit and Persian, while his mother, Kamleshwari Devi, was a devout woman who shared stories from the Ramayana and Mahabharata.

Prasad excelled in academics from a young age. He attended the University of Calcutta, where he earned a degree in law. He began his career practicing law at the Calcutta High Court and later moved to the Patna High Court. His dedication to his profession was evident as he founded the Bihar Law Weekly.

In 1917, Mahatma Gandhi recruited Prasad to help improve conditions for peasants exploited by British indigo planters in Bihar. This marked the beginning of his active involvement in the Indian independence movement. He joined the Indian National Congress and became a significant leader from Bihar. He was imprisoned multiple times by the British for his participation in the non-cooperation and Quit India movements.

Prasad’s political career reached its pinnacle when he was elected as the first President of India in 1950. He served two terms, from 1950 to 1962, making him the only president to do so. During his presidency, he established a tradition of non-partisanship and independence for the office. He also played a crucial role in shaping the Indian Constitution as the President of the Constituent Assembly.

Throughout his career, Prasad received numerous accolades. In 1962, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award. His contributions to the nation were not limited to politics; he was also a prolific writer. His notable works include his autobiography, “Atmakatha,” and books like “India Divided” and “Mahatma Gandhi and Bihar, Some Reminiscences.”

Rajendra Prasad passed away on February 28, 1963, in Patna, Bihar. His legacy as a dedicated leader, scholar, and advocate for justice continues to inspire generations.
