Although she has been an active member of the party for a while, she was unknown by many until 2023, when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu rewarded her commitment and support for his emergence with a ministerial position.

Born on the 8th of April in 1979, the 45-year-old hails from Kano State, and is the granddaughter of the late Emir Alhaji Ado Bayero. The princess and ministerial nominee received her early education in the ancient City and attended the Federal School of Physiotherapy at Bayero University, where she finished with distinction. Maryam Shetty proceeded to the renowned University of East London, Stratford, where she bagged a Masters degree in sports physiotherapy, demonstrating her academic prowess.

In a country where graduates are seen roaming the streets in search of scarce jobs, Maryam Shetty had jobs lined up for her after her programs, and this was because her expertise was in high demand. For instance, she worked with Dala Orthopedic and Malam Aminu Kano Teaching Hospitals in Kano after her BSc program. She also became a valued medical team member during the London Olympics after her master’s degree, where she was assigned to the world record holder and sprinting master, Usain Bolt, from Jamaica.

Maryam Shetty is a Muslim and happily married to Dr. Adam Kaka, her former coursemate while pursuing a Master’s degree in sports physiotherapy at the prestigious University of East London in the UK. The two lovebirds got married in June 2024, less than 11 months after President Tinubu withdrew her ministerial nomination and picked Dr Mariya Mahmoud, another woman and member of the APC, from her state.

Maryam Shetty comes from the northern region known for a religion that supports early marriage. But she didn’t marry until she was 44. She and Dr Adam Kaka, her classmate at UEL and now husband, tied the knot in June 2024.

Maryam Shetty’s academic journey is inspiring. She started her early education in Kano and attended the Federal School of Physiotherapy at Bayero University, where she graduated with distinction. She left for the United Kingdom, where she pursued a master’s Degree in Sports Physiotherapy from East London University, Stratford, UK. With her social entrepreneurship and educational philanthropy, Maryam’s career in physiotherapy has earned her recognition as one of the influential young leaders in Nigeria and Africa.

As a lover of knowledge, Maryam wanted to expand her academic pursuits beyond healthcare, where she has done excellently well. She embarked on a journey of social change by obtaining a Kingian Non-Violence Practitioner certificate from the prestigious Emory University in the United States, inspired by the principles of the famous Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Maryam also received an Honorary Degree from the ESGT University of Technology, Benin Republic, recognizing her exemplary leadership and appreciation of her contributions to community development.

Maryam Shetty Political Career

Maryam Shetty is a politician. Her rising fame in Nigerian politics isn’t accidental nor earned on a silver platter. Her rise to stardom is a product of her dedication to her party, the APC. She was given several roles within the Presidential Campaign Team Field Operations. She was also one of the members of the Youth and Women Presidential Campaign Team, designed explicitly for Strategic Communication during the 2023 presidential election.

Additionally, Maryam Shetty was one of the seven committee members who successfully organized a peaceful election Congress in Delta State. This landmark achievement etched her name in the excellent book of the movers and shakers of her party, the All Progressives Congress.

Maryam Shetty played a crucial role in President Bola Tinubu’s emergence in the 2023 presidential election. Her extensive network, participation in contact and mobilization efforts, and her significant contributions to the policy making and strategy committees cannot be overlooked.

In recognition of her exceptional dedication to the party and contributions to its victory in the 2023 presidential election, President Tinubu nominated her to serve as a minister under his cabinet. However, she received the most shocking news while waiting for the senate to screen her for the national assignment. Her name has been removed to accommodate another APC woman from her State, Dr Mariya Mahmoud.

Maryam Shetty’s removal sparked reactions from Nigerians, with some saying she was removed because she stepped on toes. Some believed the leaders of the APC in her state were only contacted after she was nominated. Hence, they asked Mr President to withdraw her name from the list.
